Since I was a very adventurous hiker, my mum was scared that I might fall off one of the many cliffs, and tied a rope around my waist that connected us in case I slipped. While resting on the trail, I found a shady nook to sit away from the sun. A ranger came by, and, seeing my mum's rope, told her that there were no pets allowed on the trail, to which she sheepishly responded, "That's not a dog, that's my son..."

Adults were often startled to hear such a low voice come out of such a tiny child the first time they heard me talk, and once, I was actually sent home from school “sick” on my first day because my teacher thought I couldn’t possibly just have a voice that low. My mom had to show up at my school to assure the Nurse that, No, she’s not sick. She’s just allergic to everything and has nearly constant hay fever. (Lucky me.) I eventually grew out of the allergies, grew into the voice, and ended up as a Soprano as an adult.

When he came to perform at MIT the following spring, we got to open for him; naturally everything was running late so we didn’t get to practice on stage and no one introduced us, so the hundreds of MIT students in attendance had no idea who we were or why we were singing a slow, sad a capella song at their spring concert (“Evaporated," if you were wondering). But, it was great because 1) we were opening for Ben Folds, and 2) we got to hang out backstage with Ben’s opener: a little-known singer-songwriter named Sara Bareilles. Of course, years later Ben Folds and Sara Bareilles would become two of my favorite artists, but little high-schooler me was oblivious to this fact and I’ve been jealous of her ever since.

I was on the preschool playground when I got upset that another kid wouldn't let me play with some toy. I ran inside to tell the teacher, but on the way tripped and fell onto the corner of a brick step, thereby cracking open my forehead. I was rushed off to the local Chinese hospital where the only English-speaking surgeon was taken out of another surgery to stitch up my head. To make matters worse, while my mom was watching the doctor take care of me, she fainted!

Favorite VoiceLab Song So Far: "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparrow, as performed by Brian Pepe-Mooney Tell Us a Cool/ Funny/ Random Story About Something That Once Happened To You: Although I keep a handful of citrus plants and herbs, I mostly focus on growing hot peppers. One summer day, after watering and harvesting some jalapenos and habaneros, an elderly gentleman and his golden retriever stopped by to smell the flowers along the sidewalk of my house. While exchanging pleasantries with the man, the dog somewhat idly strolled towards me, sniffing around, as dogs often will. Now, as with most smaller and unfamiliar creatures, I tend to wait for them to approach me, so as not to accidentally startle or intimidate them. The dog curiously raised his nose to my hand, touched his tongue to my fingertips, and suddenly shuddered, as if electrified!! Since the man and I were still in the midst of conversation, he didn't seem to notice the dog recoil, and they soon continued their afternoon walk down the street. I gathered my peppers to bring inside, feeling perplexed by the dog's striking reaction to my touch. Did I do something subtle to frighten him in such a visceral way? I looked into my hands, and it clicked. Catching the whiff of pungency, the unsuspecting pup got a full taste of habanero!

Tell Us a Cool/ Funny/ Random Story About Something That Once Happened To You: The house I grew up in had mice, and when the exterminator visited, my parents pulled me aside and explained that even though poison was dangerous, it was also useful. It was summer, so the next time I was selling lemonade on the sidewalk, I also gathered up all the pokeberries and deadly nightshade in my backyard, squished them up, carefully labeled them "poison," and sold them next to the lemonade. I thought it would be useful for people. Didn't sell very well.
