VOICELAB AUDITIONS – We can’t wait to hear you!

It’s audition time again! VoiceLab is holding open auditions on Tuesday, September 17th 2024. This year we are welcoming basses and percussionists who also sing to audition!

Sign up for an audition at https://bit.ly/vlaudition2024

The audition (what you need to prepare):

  • A verse and chorus of any song of your choice. This segment should show off your range, musicality, personality, and any other vocal talents you want to show us. You can sing a song from any genre of music, but we typically advise auditionees to choose something other than classical or musical theater pieces as we don’t generally sing music from those genres.
  • If you are able to beatbox, let us know and show us your stuff!

The audition will also include elements of the following:

  • Range Test – Sing two sets of scales (which we’ll teach you) to demonstrate your range.
  • Ear training – Listen to a series of four-note combinations, then sing them back.
  • Sight Reading – See a piece of our sheet music and take a moment to digest it, then we’ll give you the tempo and starting pitch, and you sing through about 8-16 bars of the music.

You will be notified by email if you are invited to our callbacks.

FAQ:

Q: Is it hard to get in?

A: Because we are usually comprised of about 16-18 people, VoiceLab is a highly competitive group; however, that is not to say that you have to be a musical genius or be the next American Idol to join our ranks! Everyone should audition, because you never know what we’re looking for in any particular semester! Each semester we typically accept between 2-4 new members, space permitting. Most of our members sang in competitive undergraduate a cappella groups, but we’ve also had several members who are new to the a cappella genre. We love hearing auditionees with a wide variety of musical experience so don’t be shy and show us what you’ve got!

Q: When do you rehearse?

A: We rehearse every Tuesday night from 7-9:30 PM. We also hold occasional additional rehearsals as needed.

Q: What are rehearsals like?

A: We have a lot of fun during rehearsals, but we also aim to stay productive and motivated. With only 2.5 hours a week to learn several new songs a semester, we cover a lot of material at a pretty quick pace, but we keep the environment casual and make time to catch up. After all, we do this for fun!

Q: What level of commitment do you expect from members?

A: We’re all graduate students or young professionals with other priorities and we know that things come up, but we ask members to aim to miss no more than 4 rehearsals a semester.
