Since I was a very adventurous hiker, my mum was scared that I might fall off one of the many cliffs, and tied a rope around my waist that connected us in case I slipped. While resting on the trail, I found a shady nook to sit away from the sun. A ranger came by, and, seeing my mum's rope, told her that there were no pets allowed on the trail, to which she sheepishly responded, "That's not a dog, that's my son..."

I then got glued back together in the emergency room. To this day I have a bald spot where my scalp was once sliced open.

When he came to perform at MIT the following spring, we got to open for him; naturally everything was running late so we didn’t get to practice on stage and no one introduced us, so the hundreds of MIT students in attendance had no idea who we were or why we were singing a slow, sad a capella song at their spring concert (“Evaporated," if you were wondering). But, it was great because 1) we were opening for Ben Folds, and 2) we got to hang out backstage with Ben’s opener: a little-known singer-songwriter named Sara Bareilles. Of course, years later Ben Folds and Sara Bareilles would become two of my favorite artists, but little high-schooler me was oblivious to this fact and I’ve been jealous of her ever since.

I was on the preschool playground when I got upset that another kid wouldn't let me play with some toy. I ran inside to tell the teacher, but on the way tripped and fell onto the corner of a brick step, thereby cracking open my forehead. I was rushed off to the local Chinese hospital where the only English-speaking surgeon was taken out of another surgery to stitch up my head. To make matters worse, while my mom was watching the doctor take care of me, she fainted!

Tell Us a Cool/ Funny/ Random Story About Something That Once Happened To You: The house I grew up in had mice, and when the exterminator visited, my parents pulled me aside and explained that even though poison was dangerous, it was also useful. It was summer, so the next time I was selling lemonade on the sidewalk, I also gathered up all the pokeberries and deadly nightshade in my backyard, squished them up, carefully labeled them "poison," and sold them next to the lemonade. I thought it would be useful for people. Didn't sell very well.

Luckily nothing serious happened and we stayed calm as we backed away. He sniffed our pot of ramen noodles and went on his merry way. I lost my appetite after that and promptly got into my tent for the rest of the night!

When I had red hair, a surprising number of people would rub my head for good luck. Didn't matter the scenario - it happened on the subway, waiting in line, and even at a conference. When it happened at the conference, the person did end up giving an amazing talk right after that... Coincidence? I think maybe not. Anyways, I ultimately ended up shaving my head, but then people started rubbing my head because it was smooth. However, the luck did not seem to follow this time around. I believe all of this lends sound scientific evidence to the theory that red hair carries good luck and is probably a solid career move. |

Throughout my adventures, the two most contrasting and memorable things I've done come down to: snorkeling with colleagues in subzero temperatures during a blizzard in Iceland and running at top speed off of a cliff and hang-gliding over sunny Rio de Janeiro with my best friend.
